You don't often see boys in shirts and ties playing basketball, unless you're in the gym at Hartford's Covenant Preparatory school at recess.Ten eighth graders are soon to be the first graduates of the cutting edge middle school after a 3-year immersion in academics, service and good old hard work.

"It's been really tough because I wasn't really used to the work before, but the teachers they sort of helped me through it," says Antonio Benitez of Windsor.The school is part of the network of Nativity Miguel Schools in urban areas across the country. The goal is to provide motivated boys from underserved families in the Hartford area with an challenging learning environment and the tools to succeed in class and in life. Covenant Prep is tuition-free; private donations cover every expense.

Principal Meara Weaver says the focus here is simple. "We told them then the whole goal of you coming here to school is get you into a great high school and a great college, and they've had that in their minds from day one," says Weaver. For the past year, the 10 boys were put through the paces of SSAT test preparation, school tours, test taking and interviews at some of the best prep schools in New England. This month, they all learned their next destinations.

Volunteer Spotlight Hats off to Sarael Sargent and the Secondary School Volunteers

By April we will know what schools the 8th graders will be attending. The process to get them enrolled in a secondary school started when Sarael Sargent and her team of volunteers started planning the secondary school placement process over a year ago. As the 8th graders were studying hard to take the secondary school admission test, families were meeting once a month to help understand the process. After the winter break students, families and the Secondary School Committee spent long hours filling out applications and financial forms with the goal in mind to get full scholarships. “ My favorite part of the process was working with the parents,” said Sarael. Johnny’s Jog for Charity, Inc to benefit four local non-profit organizations

The Johnny’s Jog 5K will begin and end at the West Hartford Town Hall. Participants are welcomed to Run, Walk, and Push Strollers or show support of the event with family and friends. On air-air radio personality Joan Dylan, from Lite 100.5 will DJ the event and a bagpiper will be on-site to play traditional Irish music. The New Britain Rock Cat’s mascot “Rocky” will make an appearance to sign autographs. Prizes will be awarded for best Irish garb and participants will receive coupons for use at contributing local businesses.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the 5K starting at 11a.m. Free parking will be provided at the Town Hall outdoor lot located at 50 South Main Street. To register, visit online.

Founded by West Hartford residents Dan and Laura Moran and Dan and Kelly Clark, Johnny’s Jog Charity, Inc. was inspired by Johnny, the Moran’s 4-year-old son, who has battled an unknown neuromuscular condition since birth. With the unending love and support of so many individuals and organizations, Johnny has continued to persevere through life’s seemingly unbearable challenges. The vision of “Johnny’s Jog for Charity” is to bring the community together with a grand St. Patrick’s Day event benefiting various local non-profit charities so that other families can experience the same generous support. “Johnny has been a gift to our family over the past four years. He has opened our eyes to a world of humanity that has blown us away. We have benefited greatly from so many individuals and organizations that we feel compelled to pay it forward” says Laura Moran.

Proceeds for the event will benefit the following four non-profit charities:Advocacy for Patients with Chronic Illness, 3rd and Goal Foundation, Camp Care and Covenant Preparatory School of Hartford.
