Bethany Kaylor Raymond, Teacher

BETHANY KAYLOR RAYMOND- Teacher, is from Milford, Pennsylvania. After beginning her college career at Lackawanna College, in Scranton Pennsylvania, she attended East Stroudsburg University. Her undergraduate degree is in history and secondary education; her graduate degree is in special education. Throughout her years in college, Bethany spent time playing basketball for the school and studying in the Dominican Republic.

Shortly after finishing student teaching, a job opened up at Lackawanna College in adult education. For three years, Bethany taught adult education and continuing education classes at the college, while coaching basketball for Pocono Mountain West High School as well. After she finished her graduate degree in special education, she then began teaching college algebra and college writing; mentoring and tutoring students were a task that she enjoyed here, during her time teaching for this school. After moving to Connecticut, she saw an opening for Covenant Prep and immediately sought a teaching position here. When Bethany is not teaching, she enjoys participating in many different sports, hiking, camping, kayaking, and training for triathlons

Kristen Skelly, Teacher

KRISTEN SKELLY- Teacher originally from West Hartford, Connecticut, graduated from Assumption College in 2008 with a degree in Mathematics. In 2011, she earned her Teaching Certificate in Secondary Mathematics from Central Connecticut State University. During her years at Assumption, Kristen volunteered at a local animal shelter and food pantry to give back to the community.

Kristen knew she wanted to work at Covenant Prep almost immediately after her initial visit. Within her first minutes of arrival, she was greeted by the boys’ firm handshakes and the smiles of the inviting staff. She knew the warm atmosphere and sense of community she felt at Covenant Prep was truly unique. In her first year, Kristen is thrilled to be teaching 5th, 6th and 8th grade math. In her free time, you can find Kristen playing with her beloved dog, spending time with her family and friends, cooking and doing arts and crafts.

Kyle Pilon, Teacher

KYLE PILON, Teacher, originally from Hamden, CT, graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2011 with a degree in History. Kyle was involved in numerous youth and adolescent programs while at Connecticut. His time with the Mansfield Youth Services Big Friends program as well as the Jumpstart for Young Children program were the high points of his college career. During his senior year, Kyle was looking for a chance to help level the playing field in education among urban youths. After coming across the Covenant Prep website, he went for a visit and fell in love with the atmosphere of the school and the level of commitment that everyone shows, including the students. In his first year, Kyle will be teaching 5th grade Math, as well as 6th and 8th grade Social Studies. He will also lead the Chess Team. When not in school, Kyle loves anything involving UConn, playing ice hockey, and enjoying the outdoors with friends and family as much as possible.

Patrick Jones, Teacher

PATRICK JONES- Teacher, is originally from just outside Utica, NY and graduated from Williams College in 2011 with a degree in Economics. While attending Whitesboro Public High School, he played football, hockey and lacrosse, and helped organize several fundraising events for the American Cancer Society. At Williams, he was, at various times, a member of the varsity football team, a radio show host, an economics tutor, and a volunteer for a non-profit organization working on economic development in Malawi. He spent a semester of his junior year in Scotland, and elsewhere in Europe, where he developed an interest in political philosophy and development economics.

Patrick sees teaching as a moral imperative, deriving from his feeling that he has benefited greatly from his own education and would like to give back in a direct manner. He was impressed by how well Covenant brings its mission to fruition, as well as by its sense of community and shared well-being. In his first year at Covenant Prep, he will be teaching 6th and 7th grade Science, as well as 8th grade Math. Patrick enjoys reading novels and keeping up with contemporary political debates, and ultimately plans to pursue a graduate degree in a field related to public policy.

Mathew Obengo - Teacher

MATHEW OBENGO- Teacher, originally from Nairobi, Kenya, graduated from Williams College in 2010 with a degree in Physics. He plans to pursue Electrical Engineering after teaching at Covenant Prep. Mathew spent the summer of 2008 working at a school in Botswana, and he has also served his college community by working as a physics tutor. The experience motivated him to do a year of service before moving on to Engineering school. He was deeply impressed with Covenant Prep’s mission and operating principles when he visited the school, and he knew right away that he wanted to spend his gap year being part of the Covenant Prep community. For his first year at Covenant Prep, he will be teaching 5th and 8th grade science along with 7th grade mathematics. Mathew is a soccer and philosophy enthusiast and enjoys reading and writing poetry.

Katherine Zakreski - Graduate Support & Admissions Director

KATHERINE ZAKRESKI- Graduate Support & Admissions Director, originally from Fair Haven, NJ, graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2009 with a degree in Psychology and Women’s & Gender Studies. Katie has long had an interest in education and service. She tutored students from local high schools in Worcester, MA, during her years at Holy Cross, and was a teacher’s aide at the YWCA of Central Massachusetts.

After hearing about Covenant Prep from other Holy Cross graduates involved with the school, Katie decided that joining the Covenant Prep community would offer her the chance to give back to a community of students who deserve the same excellent education which she received throughout elementary school, high school, and college. After a great two years teaching, Katie returns to Covenant Prep for a third year to take on a new role of directing our Graduate Support Program as well as working with student admissions. This year, she will also teach a section of 8th grade Reading and Language Arts. When she isn’t at Covenant, Katie enjoys cooking, traveling, the beach, New Jersey bagels, and music, particularly Bruce Springsteen.

Meara Weaver- Principal

MEARA WEAVER- Principal, originally from Albany, NY, graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2008 with a major in Psychology and minors in French and Africana Studies. While in college, she studied for a year abroad at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaounde, Cameroon, where she had the opportunity to assist teaching a kindergarten class and to tutor elementary school students. While at Holy Cross, she participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor program, and also volunteered tutoring middle school and high school students in Worcester each week.

Meara discovered Covenant Prep through Patrick Moore, Covenant’s founding Head of School, and decided to join the school after hearing about the opportunity to be a part of a brand new school with a strong mission in which she believed. After an exciting two years teaching and one year serving as principal, Meara returns for her fourth year. Meara has loved working with extremely bright and motivated young men and their incredibly committed families as well as phenomenal, dedicated staff and volunteers.

Brigid Cremin - Teacher

BRIGID CREMIN- Teacher, is from the North Shore of Chicago, IL and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2010 with a degree in Art History and Africana Studies. At Holy Cross, Brigid was involved with various tutoring programs throughout Worcester, including tutoring African refugees living in the city. In addition, Brigid spent her junior year of college abroad in Cork City, Ireland where she was able to reconnect with her Irish relatives and continue her studies in Art History.

Brigid heard about Covenant Prep through Meara Weaver, who was her Spring Break Immersion Program student leader in Spring 2008. Upon applying to the program and visiting the school, Brigid realized that working at Covenant Prep would be a great way for her to give back to the community by providing these young men with an enriching education. Brigid will be returning to Covenant Prep for a second year to teach 6th grade Reading and Language Arts, as well as 5th grade Social Studies. When she is not teaching, Brigid enjoys traveling, listening to music, and spending time with her family!

Matthew Kelsey, Teacher

MATTHEW KELSEY, Teacher, originally from Cambridge, MA, graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY in 2011 with a degree in History. Matthew developed an interest in working with children through his experience as a camp counselor at YMCA Camp Coniston in New Hampshire, and then as a tennis instructor and site leader for Tenacity, Inc., a program serving inner-city Boston youth. In college, Matthew played 4 years of varsity soccer and captained the team in his senior season.

Matthew heard about Covenant Prep through a close friend, and looks forward to teaching 5^th and 6^th grade Math, and 7^th grade Social Studies. He looks forward to coaching soccer and serving as Athletic Director at Covenant Prep. Matthew enjoys spending time outside, playing just about any sport, reading, and he feels very fortunate to be a Boston sports fan.

Suzanne Wallace, Teacher

SUZANNE WALLACE- Teacher, originally from Shoreham, NY, recently graduated from the College of the Holy Cross with a double major in Spanish and Deaf Education. While at Holy Cross, Suzanne volunteered as a Big Sister, was an ESL tutor for children and adults from Spanish-speaking countries, and was a member of the cross-country team. She spent her junior year abroad in La Coruña, Spain, where she had the wonderful opportunity to travel throughout Europe and improve her Spanish.

Suzanne has a sincere interest in educating others and feels that Covenant Prep provides an ideal environment. This year, Suzanne will be teaching 5th grade English and Language Arts, as well as 8th grade math. Suzanne will be co-coaching the Covenant Prep cross-country team this fall. She enjoys running, traveling, watching the Mets and Jets, and photography.

Rebecca Charlton- Teacher

REBECCA CHARLTON- Teacher, originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a degree in Anthropology and minors in Political Science and Asian Studies. During her time at HWS, Rebecca was a volunteer for Jumpstart, a non-profit organization that worked with low-income pre-schoolers to improve language and reading skills. She was also on the Varsity Rowing Team throughout her college years and also did an anthropological study on women and sports in North India for a semester.

Rebecca knew she wanted to give back to the community after graduation. After an HWS alum came back to recruit teachers and after spending a day at Covenant Prep, Rebecca couldn’t picture herself anywhere but in Hartford. After visiting Covenant, she was excited about creating change in the Hartford community and was overjoyed to be offered a position as the 6^th grade Math teacher and the 7^th grade Reading and Language Arts teacher for the 2011-12 year. Rebecca will also serve as the advisor to the Student Council and will co-coach cross-country. When she is not teaching, Rebecca enjoys hiking, camping, reading, and enjoying the great outdoors!

Marvin Coote - Head of School

Marvin Coote- Head of School, Head of School, joins us this year after working as the Executive Director of the Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation since 2009. At HYSF, he worked with middle school students through a 14-26 month, rigorous academic program that prepared them for acceptance and success at independent high schools throughout New England. Prior to HYSF, Marvin worked for New Community for Children in Washington, D.C. as the Executive Director for 4 years. Before that, he worked with the Coaching for College Program and Kids Computer Workshop in a series of administrative roles. Prior to working in Washington, Marvin worked in Boston for the National Coalition of Advocates for Students, a policy, research, and advocacy group for minority youth. Marvin’s first job out of college was Director of Planning and Development at YouthBuild Boston.

Marvin graduated from Harvard College in 1995 with Bachelors degree in Government. In college, Marvin named a Stride Rite Fellow to mark his commitment to public service. Recently, Marvin was elected to the Board of Directors of Bay Path College.
