Supporting students to achieve their study goals and make academic progress is a key element of a Covenant Preparatory School education.  Evening study occurs four nights each week at the school, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm following the completion of sports and activities.   Students also have focus group time during the school day when they may receive tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11AM to 12PM. Our ability to give each student individualized attention, that addresses their academic challenges and immediate homework assignments, relies on the dedication of volunteer tutors.  While there is an assigned faculty member (Evening Study Coordinator) who proctors each study session, the availability of volunteer tutors helps to create the one-on-one support that is critical to each student and their learning in a particular subject area.

Tutors help in the following ways:

•Meet with students to determine the type of help needed.  Sometimes this will focus on an immediate homework assignment and sometimes this will lend itself to building skills in a particular subject area over a series of meetings.

•Communicate with assigned faculty member regarding problem areas so that there is continuity with classroom study.

•Help to maintain the seriousness of the study environment for all present.

•Assist with developing the skills for independent study that are critical for each student’s success as they progress toward high school.

Guidelines for tutors:

Please help students to organize their time and assist in completing homework thoroughly and carefully in the allotted time.  Offer new strategies for learning or reviewing basic skills.  Please DO NOT complete homework for students.

Please be sure to use an organized approach for completing work in thirty minute sessions.  Students need to develop good organization habits and take responsibility for being prepared.  All students should have the necessary books, notebooks and writing utensils before tutoring begins.   All students should also have their homework assignments written in their assignment books.  Please notify the Evening Study Coordinator if a student is not prepared.

Please bring discipline issues to the attention of the Evening Study Coordinator or a school administrator.  Our students are held to high standards of behavior at all times.
